What To Bring To The New World

October 7-8, 2023 at the 1809 Hedge House Museum, Plymouth

Have you ever wondered what the Mayflower Pilgrims and the colonists that came on the later ships brought with them to the shores of New England? It wasn't like today. If you forgot to pack something, you simply would have to do without it, potentially for a very long time. Everything from the clothes you would need, the food you would eat, the tools of whatever trade you expected to have once you arrived had to be brought with you.

Using historical accounts, the New Plimmoth Gard will present a weekend encampment filled with the items that came with the colonists. See what a housewife would bring to setup a household, the tools a farmer would bring in order to provide for his family, and what various craftsmen would bring in order to work their trades here in the new world. There will also be demonstrations of the muskets, pikes, swords and armor that all able-bodied men were required to have.

Join us as we bring history to life on the grounds of the 1809 Hedge House Museum, 126 Water Street, Plymouth MA. This will be a free family event.

Are you curious?

Several provisions lists from the time period are still available today. See what new comers were encouraged to bring with them to the New World.

1622: Edward Winslow

1624: Captaine John Smith

1630: Francis Higginson

1639: William Wood

1675: John Josselyn
